Charlie Strong: I don’t believe Texas has made a decision to fire me
The Austin American-Statesman reported that upperclassmen are trying to intervene to calm the situation.
The NCAA Team Texas Longhorns faced the Kansas Jayhawks yesterday and the game ended in a close fight.
We would have to wait for the Longhorns game against TCU and what would be results of the game to the team and to their coach as well.
It is. I’ve covered Texas a few times over the past month working sidelines and will have them again this week for the TCU game.
Longhorns AD Mike Perrin later released a statement that Strong was preparing for the regular-season finale and would be evaluated after Friday’s game against TCU.
The speculation about Strong’s future in Austin, or lack of, intensified in the wake of Saturday’s shocking 24-21 overtime loss to Kansas, a team that had lost 19 straight Big 12 games and had not beaten a FBS opponent in nearly three seasons.
There have been several positive moments in Strong’s tenure – last season’s wins over Oklahoma and Baylor, this year’s thrilling opening victory against Notre Dame – but the Longhorns have been inconsistent, failing to build any sort of momentum.
Strong addressed the thought in his weekly press conference call Monday morning local time saying players. Many have been left wondering why Strong still has the reins after a 21-24 loss to one-win Kansas.
“When you get in this profession, it’s all about developing young men”. That would be a slight raise in salary for a Texas head coach, as Strong signed a five-year deal worth $5.2 million per year.
“I hope the decision hasn’t been made yet”, Strong said.
“They won’t boycott this game”. It also didn’t help his cause that Tom Herman, a former UT graduate assistant pegged as the likely top candidate to take over should Strong be ousted, also had a huge win Thursday night when his Houston team dominated No. 5 Louisville.
From there, the season has carried the unwanted allure of slight farce, at a program with an inflated view of its own past, with the last 30 years bringing one national championship, 11 10-win seasons but also nine non-winning seasons with a 10th still possible, all at a pocket of football wealth.
“Well I guess they’re technically waiting until the end of the year but I thought they would wait to announce it until then”. Perrin didnt show up at Strongs news conference Monday and neither did school President Greg Fenves, who has publicly supported Strong but has been silent on his future since the Kansas loss. “We’re all frustrated. Standing in the room [with his players on Sunday], I could see the look in their eyes how frustrated they were about that loss”.
Strong has reached this point because of a 16-20 overall record in three seasons.
“What’s special is when you get it from the parents”, Strong said of the supportive messages he’s received. Texas superfan Matthew McConaughey showed some support for his head coach.
Asked whether he knew what the loss meant, Strong replied: “No, I don’t”.
