Charsadda attack: Gunmen try to storm Pakistan university
The attack comes slightly a year after the horrific one on the Army Public School in Peshawar in December 2014 where armed militants killed over 140 people including over 130 students.
According local TV channels, three gunmen entered the Bacha Khan University and opened fire on students and teachers in classrooms and hostels.
The eyewitness also said he was inside the university a couple of minutes ago, and a lot of gunfire could be heard.
Eight injured, including three students, have been brought to District Headquarters Hospital while emergency has been declared at all hospitals in the area.
Meanwhile, extensive firing continues in the area and heavy contingents of elite force have been deployed.
Deputy Inspector General Saeed Wazir told news agency Reuters police were now moving into the university.
“There are male and female staff members and students on the campus”, he said, adding he had been on his way to work when he was informed of the attack.
Reportedly, some of the students managed to escape from the building as they heard gunshots.
“Armed men stormed into the university premises earlythis morning”, Sardheri police officials said.
“At the moment, I have no details about the casualties from the attack”, he added.
The Bacha Khan University in Charsadda is about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the city of Peshawar.
