Chelsea 3 Everton 3: Terry nets in 8th minute of injury time
Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given says that the goal scored by John Terry to level things at Stamford Bridge between Everton and Chelsea should not have stood.
John Terry scored a controversial equaliser in the 98th minute to rescue a point for Chelsea in a pulsating 3-3 draw with Everton.
Just as Everton were about to celebrate their first win in the league at Chelsea since November 1994, Terry came up with the victor deep into added time with a goal which appeared suspiciously offside.
The point does little to help Chelsea, which remains in 14th place, six points above the relegation zone and 14 points from the Champions League places. It was Jose Mourinho’s decision to let go of the striker following the arrival of Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid.
The first half was tepid, with little action on goal.
Chelsea was relegated in 1988 but instantly returned to the topflight.
But Terry converted after a late bombardment, to the fury of the visitors after seven minutes’ stoppage time had been signalled by the fourth official, to earn a scarcely believable point.
At the other end Everton went close twice in quick succession with Mirallas rightly having a goal disallowed for being offside, then Ross Barkley’s shot was deflected into Bryan Oviedo’s path but the Costa Rican scuffed his effort wide.
Guus Hiddink is yet to suffer defeat as Chelsea manager, but the Premier League champions have not been the dominant force of last season sinceJose Mourinho’s departure last month.
– Roberto Martinez managed his 250th Premier League game on Saturday, becoming the 21st manager to reach this landmark in the competition.
Aaron Lennon sprayed the ball to Baines on the left flank and his crosswas whipped into Mirallas, who controlled the ball on the turn before striking into the net.
“We showed an incredible determination to get the winning goal”.
