Chelsea Clinton Will Stay on Board at the Clinton Foundation
Hillary Clinton’s closest State Department aides were closely involved in coordinating events, talking points, and projects with the Clinton Foundation, according to emails, despite ethics agreements that were meant to create a firewall between Clinton’s office and her family’s foundation.
A statement Clinton issued on Monday said those changes will go into effect if Hillary Clinton is elected.
The latest group of previously undisclosed emails released by Judicial Watch, which obtained them under a court order, showed that Clinton’s top aide, Huma Abedin, served as a facilitator between the foundation and State.
Asked about the possibility of giving her first press conference of 2016, Mrs. Clinton said to “stay tuned”.
“That is absurd”, she told the Cable News Network before describing the story as “all smoke, no fire”. In addition, reports say that Clinton, while being questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, declared that she was advised by her predecessor Colin Powell to use a private email system as secretary of state. She said the foundation had provided “life-saving work”, adding that neither she nor her husband had ever drawn a salary from the charity. “Just taking the subset of meetings arbitrarily selected by the AP, it is outrageous to misrepresent Secretary Clinton’s basis for meeting with these individuals”.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has seized on an Associated Press report this week that said more than half of a set of 154 people from private interests who met or had scheduled calls with Mrs. Clinton while she was at the State Department also gave to the Clinton Foundation or pledged commitments to its worldwide programs.
The analysis drilled in on “154 people from private interests” who chatted by phone or met with Clinton in person.
But why were these emails going back and forth between the State Department and foundation staff at all?
Now she has another story: That she set up her home-based private email server on advice from former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
“When Republicans meet with their donors, with their supporters, their activists, they call it a meeting”.
What they say: Clinton lied about releasing all her work-related emails. In other words, most of the people with whom Clinton met as secretary of state. She says her lawyers conducted an electronic search using relevant terms, to help decide which emails to keep.
Liberal panelist Mike Barnacle tossed in his two cents, saying that while he doesn’t believe the decisions would lead to “corruption”, he does believe they illustrate bad judgment.
Government watchdog groups are also warning of potentially “very serious” conflicts of interest if the foundation continues to operate in the same way with Clinton in the White House. “This one could have used some more precision”.
With a presidential election on the line, Hillary Clinton is beginning to take ethics regarding her family’s Clinton Foundation seriously.
“The Clinton Foundation can play a vital role in filling important gaps in the public record by demonstrating its commitment to transparency and making public all correspondence its officials had with the State Department during Secretary Clinton’s tenure”, Reince Priebus, the RNC chairman, said in a letter to the foundation’s president, Donna Shalala. The foundation works on global health, development, climate change and women’s issues.
