Chelsea doctor, Eva Carneiro could be axed from bench, team’s training
With Chelsea already down to 10 men after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’s red card and the game level at 2-2, he was anxious his team might be vulnerable with only eight outfield players to a Swansea counter for the winning goal.
Players are expected to leave the field of play before receiving treatment on the pitch. I was sure that Eden didn’t have a serious problem.
“They were doing their job and they’ve been criticized very publicly”, Brukner said on Talk Sport radio. “But my medical department – on an impulse – was naive”.
Carneiro, who joined Chelsea in 2009, took to Facebook to thank people for their support in the wake of Mourinho’s comments. So to criticise the medical staff publicly in the way that he did was absolutely appalling behaviour’.
A furious Mourinho told Sky Sports after the game that he was “not happy” with his medical staff.
In the context of life at Chelsea that [Facebook post] looked provocative, given how much the club discourages backroom staff from make any public pronouncements.
Mourinho has come under plenty of fire for this move, as many claim that Carneiro and the other trainers were just doing their job and referee Michael Oliver in fact waved them onto the pitch twice to treat Hazard.
Fearful his side could concede with the winger off the pitch, Mourinho blasted Carneiro for her intervention, and has since seen to have the club doctor’s role at the club significantly changed.
“If you think that player is seriously injured and you got the nod [from the referee] you go on”.
Chelsea physio Jon Fearn also came in for criticism from Mourinho over the incident with Hazard and his role is being changed too, but it is Carneiro who appears to be bearing the brunt of the boss’s wrath.
Sammy Margo, the first female physiotherapist to work in football in England, said she was not sure the manager’s reaction would have been as severe had the doctor not been a woman.
Carneiro and Fearn “acted with integrity and professionalism at all times, fully cognizant of the rules of the game and in full accordance with that duty of care to their patient”, Salmon said.
“Dr Carneiro has universal and total support from her medical colleagues at the Premier League Doctors Group”, their statement read.
