Chelsea FC contact Montreal Impact over Didier Drogba
Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink has confirmed his desire to bring Didier Drogba back to Stamford Bridge soon.
In a series of tweets, the Montreal Impact confirmed their star striker had been in contact with Chelsea.
The 37-year-old Drogba, a scoring sensation with 12 goals in 12 regular season games after joining the Impact in July, could not play for Chelsea while under contract to Montreal, but could leave for a job as an assistant coach or in a backroom role.
One of the biggest reasons for Chelsea’s success last season was the signing of Didier Drogba and the difference he made in the dressing room.
‘But our objective is to have him back for another season, as agreed in his contract. “We are doing everything we can to have him back with the Impact in 2016”, the club said on Twitter. Regardless, the Impact will not willingly let go of him after he helped get the team to the playoffs and beat Toronto FC in the first round.
Chelsea, the defending Premier League champion, is mired in a relegation fight and ousted embattled manager Jose Mourinho, bringing in Guus Hiddink on a caretaker basis for the remainder of the season. Though the Canadian club stated its desire to keep hold of Drogba, it also admitted the situation was out of its control. Hiddink later said he hoped to get Drogba involved in some way with the team. “They give the Chelsea brand a big image, worldwide”. “Drogba’s heart is with Chelsea”. Their season is not lost, since the club can still qualify for Europe if they finish in the top 6 or win the FA Cup, both of which remain possible.
