Chelsea leaves it late to draw 2-2 at Newcastle
Steve McClaren is yet to register a win in the Premier League with Newcastle but he would dearly love a repeat of the same result last season where Newcastle were 2-1 winners which subsequently ended Chelsea’s 23 game unbeaten streak. Gabriel’s ban was reduced to one game while Costa was handed a three game suspension retrospectively for his involvement.
“In the first half from 0-10, we were -1″. Nemanja Matic has had a bad run of form in the midfield for Chelsea so far this year and the first half of this match was no different.
Krul has always been one of the more opinionated members of the Newcastle dressing room, but the Dutchman is urging his team-mates not to be afraid to have their say as they look to put their stuttering start to the season behind them. The ball eventually returned to Janmaat, who also fired at Chelsea keeper Asmir Begovic, but again the Blues keeper was up the challenge. They began to really dominate possession and actually create some chances for themselves. They don’t, but this is their problem.
Chelsea tried to find a way back into the game, but were stunned when in the 59th minute, Georginio Wijnaldum headed into the back of the net from a corner.
However, Mourinho quickly shuffled his pack and two of his substitutes did the trick when Ramires reduced the deficit with a 79th-minute piledriver and Willian levelled direct from a free-kick with just four minutes remaining.
Chelsea FC would have gotten a third goal if Ramires’ 89th minute header had beaten the goalkeeper.
After 2-0, I moved the team and they responded very well to get a point which is not what you want – but it’s not bad.
The hosts were certainly in the adcendency but they were nearly undone after 37 minutes when Cheslea broke at speed with Eden Hazard who found Cesc Fabregas but his powerful strike was parried by Tim Krul. The Blues, who continue to struggle, had to come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw at Newcastle.
Echoing the words of his head coach and many other Newcastle players in recent days, Perez is keen for the Magpies to keep up the standard they showed against Chelsea.
Cahill and centre-back partner Kurt Zouma were bullied by Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mourinho is now nearly certain to recall John Terry when he returns to FC Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
