Chelsea legend believes club will renew Terry contract
The January transfer window was a quiet affair for many Premier League sides, but the same can not be said for Watford, who completed arguably the best business of any top flight club.
Asked about the timing of Terry’s announcement on Sunday in wake of the club’s 5-1 FA Cup annihilation of MK Dons, Hiddink said: “It was a bit surprising, but it’s entirely up to him to do so”.
Club officials at Chelsea, however, brief the press that the management’s position on John Terry could change in the coming months.
Chelsea said they had the utmost respect for Terry and everything he has helped them achieve, describing him as a “fantastic servant and superb captain”.
Terry went on a personal tour of China last summer, as per the Daily Mirror, which sparked rumors that the Barking, London native is considering a move to the Far East Asian nation.
But former Arsenal and England defender Martin Keown told the same newspaper: “I’ve never been (Terry’s) biggest fan”.
In 22 years at Stamford Bridge he won every major club honour, including four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the Europa League and the Champions League in 2012. “I talked to the club and I will finish my contract on the original date”, he said.
“[Terry] was the symbol of cohesion inside Chelsea’s club because him, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Cech were the players who carried the club’s values for long periods”. But John’s statistics, not just that but also the view we have on him, I have on him… he’s very fit.
“It will be elsewhere for sure”, Terry said.
Players like Eden Hazard have come back into form and seem to have the spring back in their step – I can see them going on a really good run.
“I think he still has a role to play”.
Chelsea’s first-choice remains -Diego Simeone but the Argentine is proving hard to shift from Atletico Madrid.
John Terry has captained the Blues since 2004; however, on Sunday he announced he won’t return to the club next year.
“I knew before the Arsenal game, so mentally I’ve kind of accepted it. We just have to move on and climb the league”.
“Obviously I want to be at the club”.
Chelsea, who are 13th in the standings but unbeaten in nine games in all competitions, will look to continue their climb up the league when they face 10th-placed Watford on Wednesday. But I’m not even thinking of that [the new contract].
