Chelsea trounce Porto 2-0 to advance to CL knockout stages
Willian (centre) celebrates with Chelsea teammates after scoring against Porto in the UEFA Champions League. Mourinho had insisted that he didn’t fear for his job if that was to become a reality, but he will undoubtedly be mightily relieved that he will not have to test that theory.
“We want to play in the Champions League and play the best teams and for that we need to win tonight”, stated Mourinho.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho knows the fans are desperate to see the team’s form improve, and he wants that to start this evening when they play Porto at Stamford Bridge.
They will play either Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, PSV Eindhoven, Benfica, Roma or Gent. “But he didn’t say that it is good for the Premier League if we do not finish fourth”.
“We are not lucky in the Premier League”, Jose Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, told BT Sport.
“Everything has been going against us”.
“I would prefer to be here celebrating Chelsea first place and Porto second… but the group put us in this situation”. The 27-year-old had the goal at his mercy twice, but firstly his lack of pace and then his touch let him down.
“You might have eight players at a top level and three a bit down but this season maybe it’s been the other way around and it’s more hard, but we are still the same players from last season”. It was a good move and a good save from Iker Casillas but we had luck with the rebound. “At West Ham the ball looked as if it was over the line”.
“Today was an important result for the players and for the club”.
“I think [my team] were really committed to getting a result”.
“The thing that I’m most happy with, apart from the result, is the fact we needed a point to qualify and the players accepted the challenge of playing to win, ‘ said Mourinho”.
They lost 2-0 to Lyon but did finish third in the group and will drop into the Europa League.
“They were compact, showed initiative, tried to win when the draw would have been enough to qualify, they weren’t afraid of that risk. They deserved to win”.
Being here is the minimum we can give to our supporters.
And they have a decent record on the road having only lost three of their past 14 European away trips, but Chelsea have won nine and lost just two of 12 previous matches against Portuguese opposition.
“What is clear was his effort, his commitment, his great movement, which was something he didn’t have for the last couple of matches”. So it has made me know myself better and I have found myself stronger than I thought. “I am sure he is the man to continue at Chelsea”.
