Chennai airport partially reopens, technical flights resume operations but
Chennai airport is available for limited day time operations for technical ferry and relief flights, an official statement said on Friday.
Chennai: Airline companies are trying to make money from Chennai floods, disaster, they hiked flight charges for Bengaluru to Delhi and other places.
“The flights will operate from the day-time”, R.K. Srivastava, Chairman, Airport Authority of India (AAI) told. “Once power supply is restored and water evacuation happens, we can restart commercial flight services”, he added.
The runway has been cleared for operations after inspections by officials and experts, another AAI official said. Two flights of Indigo and one each of Spicejet and Trujet evacuated 319 people from there.
These passengers will be airlifted from the Chennai airport to Tambaram and Arakkonam airbase of the air force, he added. One cargo flight Singcargo B747 also departed for Singapore via Bangalore.
Meanwhile, with the torrential rains having slowed down to light showers, rescue ops and relief works have intensified as the NDRF and the Navy are taking advantage of the situation to help the stranded people.
On December 2, AAI had introduced that the airport can be shut until December 6 after heavy rains brought on flooding of the runway and close by operational areas.
“Chennai aerodrome has been closed up to 12 noon of December 6, 2015”.
We all knew that the Chennai Airport has been shut down due to water loggings and there were thousands of stranded passengers who were making their way to Bengaluru. As many as 20 global airlines operates from the airport apart from most of the domestic carriers.
