Chez Reavie sets the early pace at ATT Pebble Beach Pro
Reavie returned to the Tour a year ago on a major medical exemption, but played in just 19 tournaments and made just $331,623 and had just three top-25 finishes as he tried to rekindle his game.
Mickelson took only 11 putts on the front nine at Monterey Peninsula.
The courses are all unique, and thus their difficulty level is different. Alas, he fell one stroke short of posting 59 and “settled” for 11-under-par 60 at Monterey Peninsula’s Shore Course.
Mickelson has a good history on the Monterey Peninsula, winning the AT&T four times, 1998, 2005, 2007 and 2012, when head-to-head he beat Tiger Woods. Kang went out in 31 (he started on the back nine) on a par 37.
But Kang stole much of the limelight on day two as he defied blustery conditions to smash the course record at Monterrey Peninsula just a day after struggling to an opening 72.
Sung Kang of South Korea and Hiroshi Iwata of Japan may be tied for the lead, but Phil Mickelson is the big story after two rounds at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Sung Kang was lights out on Friday. Kang started hot on the easier back 9 that included an eagle at the par-5 16th hole. He needed a birdie at the par-3, but instead he settled for par to complete and 11-under 60, a new course record.
Throughout the years, we’ve come to expect the unexpected from Bill Murray at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. That’s obviously when you really appreciate how someone can grab a guitar, go a cappella and sound so awesome. The San Diegan threatened to get a look at 59 at MPCC when he went 7 under in his first 10 holes. That’s just what Iwata did, as he was 6-under on the front.
Beginning on the back nine, Reavie was 4 under, including an eagle on the 11th, after four holes.
Kevin Chappell (76 at Pebble Beach), who owns a home in Kirkland, was tied for 104th at 2 over.
Aussie PGA Championship victor Jason Day was on six under for the tournament, while world No 1 Jordan Spieth is well back in the field on three under. Bubba Watson, playing the AT&T for the first time in nine years, shot 1-over 73 and was derailed primarily by a pair of double bogeys. Friday was one of Spieth’s worst putting performances of his career. But the greens being poa annua are what I grew up on, so it’s a grass I feel comfortable on. Chez Reavie shot an 8-under 63 for the first-round lead.
His partner in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is Justin Timberlake.
He has never played this event, and the former U.S. Open champion was not used to making seven birdies and playing a supporting role to that other Justin in his group. His first round 6-under-par 66 at Spyglass put him in a great position. “I had been driving it so well, the best I’ve driven it in a long time”. 4 and 5 to pull even, but he bogeyed two of his next three holes.
“I thought I was going to shoot a lot lower than I did…”
