Chicago calm a day after release of video of police shooting teenager
The footage has once again reinforced calls for police to wear body cameras.
“There’s no question that at first glance, most people are going to come to the conclusion that his actions were unreasonable”, said Daniel Herbert, whose client Jason Van Dyke shot and killed 17-year-old Laquan McDonald on October 20, 2014.
Twenty-two-year-old Malcolm London was among five protesters arrested during demonstrations sparked by a video of a black teenager being fatally shot last year by a white police officer.
“You had this tape for a year and you are only talking to us now because you need our help keeping things calm”, one of the ministers, Corey Brooks, said after the meeting.
Hillary Clinton jumped on the bandwagon today when she released a statement on Twitter bemoaning the brutal death of Laquan McDonald. The uproar and a national debate on race relations was a factor in the rise of the Black Lives Matter civil rights movement, which has become an issue in the 2016 USA presidential campaign.
Pointing to the empty street behind McDonald, Davis said he saw no reason the officer chose to fire. “There’s a pain that the family is feeling”, she said. “It’s senseless. And for my family and for Chicago, we are gonna do something about it”. “Last night, authorities in Chicago released a videotape showing Laquan McDonald being shot sixteen times by police”. No damage was reported.
Jeb Bush offered similar sentiments in an appearance on CNN’s “New Day”, telling Alisyn Camerota that the officer should face charges and crediting the city for its non-violent protests – but also calling it “tough to be a police officer”.
The fears of unrest stem from long-standing tensions between Chicago police and its minority communities, partly due to the department’s reputation for brutality, particularly involving black people.
In Chicago, Van Dyke turned himself in to authorities Tuesday and has been charged with first degree murder.

An autopsy showed McDonald was shot 16 times, including at least twice in his back. Mr McDonald, who was black and had been spotted earlier that evening trying to break into parked cars, and was carrying a small knife, died in an ambulance soon after.
It shows that there were at least four other police vehicles at the scene in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, and the city has released video from the dash cams of only two of those.
Chicago police have said they will not tolerate criminal behavior during the protests.
On top of that, #LaquanMcDonald protesters demand the United Nations to immediately investigate the CPD and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office for violating the human rights of black people.
Police have said McDonald refused their orders to drop the knife and walked away from them.
Officer Jason Van Dyke is charged with the first-degree murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, who was stopped by police after slashing auto tyres.
The video at the center of the case was made public only after an independent journalist filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.
