Chicago Cubs fans turn attention to World Series
Saturday night the Chicago Cubs beat the Dodgers 5 to 0 to join Cleveland, who secured their spot in the series last week.
The Cubs dispatched the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-0 victory in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series on Saturday.
But throughout 2016, the Cubs have been the dominant team in major league competition and go into the best-of-seven World Series against the Cleveland Indians as hot favourites. Lived up to it in Game 2. The Cubs will also host Game 5, if necessary.
Next up, Game 1 in Cleveland. For more information, visit m.mlb.com/postseason-schedule. “This city deserves it so much”, Anthony Rizzo said. Even the cross town rival White Sox ended their own decades-long title drought, winning the World Series in 2005. “I don’t even want to think about work”.
The one thing that is a virtual certainty is that Jon Lester will be pitching when the series begins on Tuesday. Baez hit.318, drove in five runs and made several sharp plays at second base. They defeated the Dodgers four games to two. But throughout the season, this looked like it might be the year the Cubs could do it.
The matchup between teams that forever waited till next year – next century, really – is finally here. No more dwelling on a history of failure. Bartman became a symbol of the Cubs’ cursed fortunes, though some fans defended him by pointing out that the team still led 3-0 at the time of his interference. “We just didn’t take care of business and we made some mistakes and it cost us”.
He gave up five runs (four earned) over five innings, including two home runs.
Kershaw entered Game 6 with a 4-6 record and a disappointing 4.39 ERA throughout his career in the postseason. Some hitters took a more aggressive approach against the three-time NL Cy Young victor while others remained patient. He led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored on Kris Bryant’s single, one inning before Fowler laced an RBI single. Lights-out relievers Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman, and wily skippers Joe Maddon and Terry Francona. I also think of the living legends like Billy Williams and Fergie Jenkins and Ryne Sandberg and hope they are enjoying this journey nearly as much as the current Cubs are. “Before this year, I never thought I would see this”.
Bursting with excitement, 70-year-old Cubs fan Rich Buhrke told VOA outside Wrigley Field Sunday night that this season was unique for the Cubs who have suffered through so many losing seasons.
“These fans have been awesome since I got here and we lost 100 games”.
A majority of the fans celebrated peacefully, with many taking selfies in front of the stadium.
Crowds in Chicago overran police barricades to celebrate, and people sang “Go, Cubs, Go” and hugged in the streets, NBC Chicago reported.
Rizzo registered the last out of the pennant clincher, at the end of a game-finishing double play.
“The Chicago Cubs are National League champions”.
“For me, personally I had tears in my eyes”. “It wouldn’t have been as special sharing it with anyone else”, the son said.
I love this team – from the youthful exhilaration of guys like Javy Baez and Willson Contreras to the dog-faced impudence of veteran pitcher John Lackey. He added that the Cubs are unique because they often play during the day and still fill the ballpark.
And who could forget the eighth inning of Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS between the Cubs and Florida Marlins?
