Chicago, Deep Purple, Steve Miller, Cheap Trick & NWA Are the Newest Members
Fresh off Thursday’s (12/17) announcement of their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Cheap Trick has inked a deal with Big Machine Records (home of Steven Tyler and Taylor Swift) to release their first album in almost six years, Bang Zoom Crazy…
Not coincidentally, three of the inductees – Chicago, Deep Purple and Miller – finished in the top five in fan voting.
This year’s decision follows the previously revealed list of nominations, and means that Janet Jackson, the Smiths, Nine Inch Nails, Chic, the Cars, Chaka Khan, the JB’s, Los Lobos, the Spinners and Yes will have to wait at least until the next annual nominees list is offered. For some reason, people still think that only rock and roll acts should be inducted, when the Hall has shown a propensity to induct acts outside of the genre going back to 1987’s induction of Marvin Gaye.
The inducted members of Deep Purple include most of those from its classic period of the late 1960s to mid-1970s: Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Rod Evans, Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale, the New York Times reported.
The seminal English prog-rock band has been eligible for induction since 1993.
This year’s Rock and Roll inductees into the Hall of Fame will get their celebration on April 8, at the Brooklyn Barclay’s Center in NY, and will be televised by HBO.
N.W.A.is coming off the huge success of their biopic, Straight Outta Compton, which earned over $200 million at the box office.
N.W.A., the ’90s Compton-based hip hop group that included rappers Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next April.
A statement from the organisers said: “Deep Purple’s non-inclusion in the Hall is a gaping hole which must now be filled”, calling them “the Holy Trinity of hard rock and metal bands” along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath who are already inductees.
“Who would they induct?” “There have been so many members of this band (that) even if they say it will be core members, who would it be? I think the movie helped to get people to remember that”. That avoids the problem. “Of course, you don’t just waltz in after those 25 years, but add an extra 10 to 15 years or more, and you see why some fans are saying, “’bout time!” Also, gangsta rap is apparently rock n’ roll now.
