Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Fires Police Chief
Fallout from the November 24 release of video showing a white Chicago police officer killing a black teenager escalated Tuesday when the Cook County prosecutor’s office contradicted Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s version of how the release played out.
The white officer, Jason Van Dyke, was charged a week ago with first-degree murder in the killing of Laquan McDonald.
“Hillary Clinton is deeply troubled by the shooting of Laquan McDonald and the outstanding questions related to both the shooting and the video”, said Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon.
It was released after a freelance journalist filed suit, arguing that the video was public record. The mayor won a second-term in April following a contentious run-off election.
But Emanuel had angered black voters with his decision to close dozens of schools.
“To open up more centers, to have the kids do some positive things, have positive role models in their life, instead of just living life on the streets, ya know, gangbanging, selling drugs”, she said.
McCarthy is a well-known name here in NY. He said the move had nothing to do with his 2015 campaign. “You have human beings operating it”, he said. “They’re two conflicting principles”. Emanuel said he ultimately realized that McCarthy was becoming a liability and had to go. Political and civic leaders in Chicago had demanded the removal of Chicago top cop Garry McCarthy months before Emanuel’s uproar triggered ouster.
An interim police chief was selected until a permanent replacement is found.
Protesters had been calling for McCarthy’s dismissal in response to the handling of McDonald’s death.
Before this week, McCarthy had weathered a series of storms, such as health problems and repeated calls for his firing-including by city aldermen who claimed that McCarthy had been ineffective at his job.
Emanuel also said he opposed, at least for the time-being, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s call for the Justice Department’s civil rights division to investigate whether there is a pattern of discriminatory practice by the Chicago Police Department.
Van Dyke had a history of complaints before he shot McDonald, and in nearly every case, he was cleared.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s decision to fire Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy on Tuesday came during a particularly volatile period for the city of Chicago.
“Trust in the Chicago Police Department is broken”, Madigan wrote in a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Tuesday.
The creation of the task force was aimed to rebuild trust in the police department of one of the largest cities of the USA, he added.
But Alvarez’s campaign has already taken a hit, as U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., withdrew his endorsement, saying the delay in the McDonald case was inexcusable.
On the night of the shooting, Pat Camden, Chicago Police Union Spokesperson gave a statement on what happened.
In particular, McCarthy was a constant preacher on the need for tougher punishments for gun offenses.
Which could include some recently retired NYPD Chiefs.
