Chicago men charged in shooting of National Basketball Association star Wade’s cousin
In Chicago, police say they are trying to deal with the number of illegal guns on the city’s streets, targeting gang members with raids and beefing up community policing.
Aldridge’s parents, sister, nieces and nephews wept as they spoke about the woman they said was a gifted writer and “fighter of the family”.
“She wasn’t bothering anybody, just going to register her kids in school – and bullets that fly around and have no name chose to find its way to her head”, Aldridge’s aunt and Dwyane Wade’s mother Pastor Jolinda Wade said outside the hospital on Friday.
Jones said Aldridge and her family had recently moved to the neighborhood, and she was on her way back from registering her children for school when she was shot.
CPD Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the suspects are an example of the city’s problem with repeat offenders. 26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, also were charged with attempted murder in Friday’s shooting.
There is video of the incident, Dennihan said, but no weapon was recovered and police dont know where the weapon is.
“This tragedy isn’t just noteworthy because Ms. Aldridge has a famous family member”, exclaimed Johnson.
Authorities are investigating whether the encounter between the men was a robbery, possibly involving a driver from a ridesharing company, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Saturday. On top of the two felony charges, he also faces a misdemeanor count of criminal trespass to land.
Darwin Sorrells served three years in state prison for 2013 convictions of receiving, possessing or selling a stolen vehicle and for unlawful use or possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.
Police say both brothers are also known gang members. A bullet pierced the cheek of a 4-year-old boy as walked down a sidewalk, holding his mother’s hand. The brothers appeared in court Monday morning to be assigned a judged and a new court date. They targeted him because they could tell he was not from the area, police said. That’s when he began filming. “His brother, Derren Sorrells, was involved in a murder not only while he was on parole but while he was wearing a home monitoring bracelet”.
The former Miami Heat star has been outspoken about gun violence, speaking Thursday on a panel with other athletes hosted by ESPN’s “The Undefeated”.
The Republican vice presidential nominee would not answer direct questions Sunday about guns from IN coming into Chicago during CNN’s “State of the Union” show. The AP quoted Chicago police as saying that a fifth of the guns used in Chicago crimes are from Indiana.
Aldridge’s large extended family mourned their loss on Sunday. When asked about it, Pence instead brought up failing schools in Chicago and his running mate Donald Trump’s pledge to create jobs.
Two weeks to the day after he was paroled from prison, Derren Sorrell allegedly shot and killed Nykea Aldridge in Chicago.
His cousin, Nykea Aldridge, died of gunshot wounds after two men fired shots, apparently aimed at her companion, while the pair were walking and pushing a baby stroller in Chicago’s South Side. Police say she wasn’t the intended target.
