Chicago officer charged in 2014 fatal shooting to enter plea
“Specifically, we will examine a number of issues related to the Chicago Police Department’s use of force, including its use of deadly force, racial, ethnic and other disparities in its use of force”, US Attorney General Loretta Lynch told the press.
Any deficiencies, Watson and James agree, are in how it’s been implemented in the Chicago Police Department.
High-profile killings of black men by mainly white police officers since mid-2014 have triggered waves of protests across the country and fueled a civil rights movement under the name Black Lives Matter. Rogers and Adams placed green post-it notes at three locations where bullets were fired into the home. Some members of LeGrier’s family have said he suffered from mental illness, CNN affiliate WLS reported, but the teen’s mother has disputed that characterization. Emanuel has chose to cut his Cuba vacation short and come back to town as the Van Dyke case proceeds, and more allegations involving local law enforcement officers surface.
‘Why must police shoot first and ask questions later?’ Walker asked. Jacqueline Walker, a friend of Jones, asked. The indictment says that Van Dyke shot McDonald knowing it “created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm”.
“Something is seriously wrong”, said the Rev. Marshall E. Hatch, who attended the vigil. “How, in the middle of all this scrutiny, [can you] have a trigger-happy policeman?”. Police said Jones was killed by accident. They have been assigned 30 days of desk duty but much of what happened remains a mystery because the police aren’t talking.
“Every officer is trained in how to use a firearm, but not every officer will use their weapon”, James said. He pleaded not guilty to all charges on Tuesday at the Cook County criminal court in Chicago. IPRA spokesman Larry Merritt declined comment Sunday.
This person was “shocked, and was afraid that this would be buried”, he said.
Coleman’s family said they told officers that he was mentally ill and experiencing some type of breakdown.
“What are you doing here, you should be downtown doing something about this”, the man reportedly said, according to the New York Daily News. Police say Jones was shot accidentally and that both victims were black.
But when he described the scene after the police arrived, LeGrier repeatedly burst into tears on air.
“He was a very humble, optimistic, caring and didn’t cause any problems”, said Booth.
Cooksey denied that her son ever exhibited “combative behavior”.
Emanuel’s office said in a statement Saturday that IPRA would share its evidence with the county prosecutor’s office.
Jones was an activist involved in encouraging peace in the community.
Dominick Foster, a neighbor, said the police could have negotiated with him in order to have deescalated the situation or used a taser to subdue him, not shoot to kill him.
