Chicago Officer (Jason Van Dyke) Who Killed Jaquan McDonald Free on Bond
Protesters have been calling for McCarthy’s dismissal in response to the handling of the death of Laquan McDonald, a 17-year-old who was killed in October 2014. The judge agreed Dean should be released on bond.
“I have a lot of loyalty to what he’s done and him, but I have more loyalty to the city of Chicago and its future”, Emanuel said. Van Dyke fired 13 of the shots while McDonald was on the ground, the video shows. Van Dyke has been in jail since he was charged.
His bond had been set at $1.5 million, meaning he needed to post $150,000 to get out.
The announcements came a week after the officer, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Laquan McDonald, who was shot 16 times.
The silent Chicago video shows McDonald walking down the middle of a four-lane street.
A man who claimed to be on a mission to kill “white devils” was arrested before he could do any damage.
Classes will resume Tuesday after what university President Robert Zimmer said was a “challenging day”. UIC also issued a statement confirming that a UIC student living off-campus had been arrested in connection with the threats against the University of Chicago.
Pendleton, an honour student, became a national symbol of gun violence when she was gunned down in 2013 as she talked with friends just a mile from President Barack Obama’s South Side home.
In other high-profile police killings of black men, an officer was denied bail and others were released after posting bail.
Prosecutors indicated at Monday’s hearing that they’ll agree to Jabari R. Dean being released before trial. The city went to court to prevent its being released, arguing that doing so would interfere with a federal investigation and a probe by the state’s attorney.
A University of IL at Chicago spokeswoman confirmed that Dean is a freshman majoring in electrical engineering. He wore a red sweatshirt emblazoned with the name of that school in court. Donna More, a former federal and state prosecutor, says she plans on filing for candidacy on Monday afternoon.
Dean didn’t enter a plea and his lawyer declined comment afterward.
Earlier in the week, Emanuel’s office announced that the police department would expand its use of officer body cameras from a single district to roughly a third of Chicago.
Van Dyke wore leg irons, handcuffs and a prison uniform as he appeared before Judge Donald Panarese on Monday. Van Dyke was charged the same day authorities released video of the shooting. Van Dyke had been placed on paid desk duty after the shooting past year. “Yet it’s clear you all want and the public deserves that information”.

Van Dyke kept his head down and said nothing as made his way through the crush of reporters and photographers who staked out the jail exit.
Van Dyke’s attorney last week reassured the judge that Van Dyke is not a flight risk, explaining that he has deep ties to the community, lives with his wife and two children in Chicago and does not possess a passport.
