Chicago police arrest man in 9-year-old boy’s fatal shooting
“But we do know that these were the individuals who were involved in this”. Morgan and one of the others left in the SUV, while the third gang member picked up Tyshawn’s basketball and dribbled it a few times before giving it back to him, prosecutors said.
The victim, Tyshawn Lee, was gunned down November 2 in what police say was a targeted gang shooting. The Morgans’ mother was also shot in the arm during the attack.
Canellis said Morgan and two other men went out daily with guns looking to retaliate, Canellis said.
One bullet cut through the boy’s right thumb, suggesting he was holding his hands out to block the gunshots, according to an autopsy report.
“There is nothing this court can do to save grandmas”, the judge said.
“He was definitely lured from the park where he was playing basketball with some friends”, McCarthy said. Edwards is believed to be in the area, McCarthy said.
Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy told reporters on Friday: “It was an act of barbarism. If you have a monster willing to assassinate a 9-year-old child, what else is that person willing to do?” He also expressed frustration with police, saying investigators seemed more interested in him than in finding who shot Tyshawn.
Shooting deaths on the streets of Chicago, sadly, are nothing new. Overall, though, crime has gone down in Chicago – the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported 411 homicides in 2014, compared to 503 murders in 2012.
Chicago was shocked over the murder of the boy in Chicago’s Gresham neighborhood.
But Stokes said he felt guilty that he was not at his son’s side when he walked to his grandmother’s house on the afternoon he was killed. But they do believe that he was singled out, not for anything he did but because of his father.
Morgan’s arrest was announced on Twitter early Friday by Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
The murder caused outrage in the city, which has high levels of gun violence.
Pfleger, a Catholic priest and local faith leader, called it “a new low”.
“It’s a nine-year-old boy targeted and executed”, he said.
Police said they led to the suspects through forensic evidence, witness identification and an outpouring of tips.
