Chicago police shooting video to be released
Alvarez said that “all of the evidence points to the fact” that Johnson had a gun when he was shot, including accounts from other people in the auto with him the night he was killed. She played the video, a sample of 911 calls of residents reporting shots fired and recordings of officers calling in updates on police radios of men with a gun.
Prosecutors were unable to prove a crime had been committed beyond a reasonable doubt, Alvarez said during a press conference on the details of the investigation.
Hernandez gave chase and fired five times, hitting Johnson twice, once in the right knee and once below the right armpit.
Johnson, 25, was fatally shot in 2014 by Officer George Hernandez, whose family demanded the release of dash-cam footage from the confrontation. The Rev. Jesse Jackson said he hopes it will would focus not only on the police department, but on Emanuel’s office and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.
The shooting was investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, and was reviewed by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. He has also asked for a special prosecutor to be appointed to the case. They named Officer George Hernandez as the officer who fired the shots.
“I submit that there’s an object in his hand”, Alvarez said.
“Police officers are often forced to make split-second judgments in circumstances that are tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving about the amount of force that is necessary in any particular situation”, she said.
The officer who shot and killed Ronald “Ronnieman” Johnson the week before Laquan McDonald was shot 16 times will not be charged criminally for the shooting. Police arriving on the scene saw Johnson allegedly with a gun in his hand. An investigation from the Independent Police Review Authority found Johnson was carrying a loaded gun as he fled.
Alvarez has been criticized for not filing charges earlier in the McDonald case, in which the video shows the teen veering away from officers on a four-lane street when Van Dyke, seconds after exiting his squad vehicle, opens fire from close range. The back window of the vehicle was shot out.
Oppenheimer told ABC News last week that the video “clearly shows that [Johnson] is running away from the police officer”. At the same time, officers observed Ronald Johnson at the scene…
The announcement followed several weeks of uproar here over the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald, whose 2014 death was captured on a police dashboard camera.
“It will clear his name and show that he was unarmed, and that the police did another unjustifiable shooting”, said Dorothy Holmes, Johnson’s mother. What is clear is that a man who McCarthy said was Johnson is seen running around a corner.
“The top priority is preserving and maintaining the integrity of any investigation into police misconduct, regardless of which agency is conducting the inquiry”, a statement from Chicago’s Law Department said last week.
