Chicago religious leaders urge vote of no confidence for mayor Rahm Emanuel
Prosecutors charged Van Dyke with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. And he said he is calling for a national summit to be held in his community one of the most risky in Chicago and hoped that President Barack Obama would dispatch someone from the White House to attend.
Protesters block traffic in Loop, Lake Shore Drive during Friday rush hourAt noon at City Hall, demonstrators wanted Mayor Rahm Emanuel to submit to a special hearing about his handling of the Laquan McDonald shooting by a police officer, and others continue to call for his resignation.
Hundreds of protesters marched through the streets of Chicago and staged “die-ins” on Thursday, calling for the resignation of Emanuel a day after he emotionally apologized for the police shooting of McDonald.
Alvarez blamed the delay on the complexities of investigating a police shooting. But a judge ordered the city to release the footage last month.
“When he saw you he greeted you with a hug”, Hunter said.
McDonald was alive when the sheriff’s officer knelt down next to him, Smith said. The newly named head of the city’s Independent Police Review Authority, Sharon Fairley, said the inspector general’s involvement was important for “public confidence”.
“While the Mayor was speaking about community and respect and responsibility, he had lawyers in federal court blocking another video”, Bishop Tavis Grant told The Chicago Sun-Times, referring to Emanuel’s Wednesday speech at City Council.
For most of his life, McDonald was a ward of the state.
“And here’s why: Anita Alvarez has forfeited the moral high ground, and she’s lost the trust of the people of the county of Cook and the city of Chicago, and so the right thing for her to do is to resign”. “He tried to make you laugh”.
More demonstrations are planned for Friday, the religious leaders said. Records show he was taken from his house at the age of 3 because the state’s Department of Children and Family Services determined his mother didn’t provide proper supervision.
Smith said the first sheriff’s officer on the scene, Officer Adam Murphy, was assigned to a DUI enforcement detail patrolling an unincorporated area just northwest of Midway Airport that is not part of the city of Chicago.
