Chicago’s Kane wins the Hart Trophy
Kane’s linemate, Artemi Panarin, beat out Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere and Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid for the Calder Trophy as the top rookie, while Barry Trotz of the Washington Capitals won his first Jack Adams Award as coach of the year on a third try.
Kane is also the first American to win the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer and rounds out a season that started in controversy as the NHL’s MVP.
Panarin scored 77 points in 80 games during his debut season in North America, leading all rookies in goals (30) and assists (47).
Kane also won the Ted Lindsay Award for most outstanding player as voted by the players.
“The two guys I was up against, having a point a game as a defenseman in the National Hockey League and then putting up 27 goals as a defenseman in the National Hockey League, that’s just ridiculous”, Doughty said.
Holtby’s wins record pushed him past fellow finalists Ben Bishop of Tampa Bay, who led the NHL with a 2.06 GAA, and Jonathan Quick of Los Angeles, who played a league-high 4,034 minutes.
Kopitar led the Kings in scoring for the ninth consecutive season, the longest active such streak in the National Hockey League. “I’m very happy. Thank you very much”. “But I think all of us that have won individually tonight will trade it in for the biggest team award in winning the Stanley Cup”.
Kopitar’s teammate, Drew Doughty, won his first Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman, beating out Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson and San Jose’s Brent Burns.
The Stars won the Central Division title previous year and finished with the most points in the Western Conference.
McDavid, 19, probably would have won the award if he had stayed healthy.
They had Sidney Crosby join the Pittsburgh Penguins on stage before the Hart Trophy was given out, and host Will Arnett made a reference to perhaps seeing him “soon”.
Jim Rutherford, of the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been named the victor of the NHL General Manager of the Year Award.
It was no surprise that Panarin won the award, beating out Philadelphia defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and Edmonton phenom Connor McDavid, who missed almost half the season with a broken clavicle. In the playoffs, Gostisbehere scored one goal and added one assists for two points in the Flyers six-game series against the Washington Capitals.
