Chicago starts police accountability task force

It was released after a freelance journalist filed suit, arguing that the video was public record.

A task force is well and good, but Mr. Emanuel, forced into a runoff and reelected in April, has more explaining to do.

The Chicago Teachers Union said it supported Emanuel’s move.

“You don’t compromise an ongoing investigation”, he said Tuesday.

“He has become an issue, rather than dealing with the issue, and a distraction”, Emanuel said. In the aftermath of the shooting, Emanuel has said that he has appointed a task force to delve into police accountability in Chicago.

Emanuel also announced a task force on police accountability, with former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick serving as a senior adviser.

Another possibility is that prosecutors are looking into whether to charge Van Dyke with violating McDonald’s civil rights.

While McCarthy may be out, social media users are using the hashtag #resignRahm to similarly oust the 55 mayor of Chicago.

McCarthy, who has served the department since 2011, has not commented publicly on his dismissal. Police said after the incident that Johnson pointed a gun at them.

Through a spokesman, McCarthy declined to comment Tuesday to The Associated Press.

The audio-free video shows McDonald walking down the middle of a four-lane street. Van Dyke was charged last week with first-degree murder.

A police statement just after the shooting said McDonald refused to drop a knife and “continued to approach the officers”.

Emanuel did not mention Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, who has also been under fire for her handling of the McDonald case.

Van Dyke was released from jail Monday after paying the $150,000 required of his $1.5 million bail.

The video revealed a different story when it was released.

Last month, McCarthy fired an officer who shot and killed a woman in 2012. While he wasn’t at the restaurant at the time, he said he authorized the manager on duty to give the officers access to the footage.
