Chick-Fil-A Opens on Sunday to Help Orlando Victims
Orlando-area locations of the fast food chain flew in the face of two of those following the tragic shooting at Pulses nightclub that left 49 people dead and scores more injured.
Cathy stepped back from making public statements about his personal beliefs, telling USA TODAY in 2014, “I’m going to leave it to politicians and others to discuss social issues”.
Another Orlando-based Chick-Fil-A store, whose employees also pitched in on Sunday to feed blood donors, posted a photo of their flag at half-staff with a message of solidarity for the victims. Thank you for being an example of the love of Christ in doing right by your community.
“Turns out, that while the founders definitely don’t approve of that choice of lifestyle, they believe in compassion”, she wrote. The shooter, who expressed support for Islamic terrorist groups and made frequent comments against gay people, entered a gay nightclub in Orlando around 2 a.m. Sunday and started shooting. However, in the wake of the Orlando, Florida, massacre early Sunday morning, several nearby Chick-Fil-A locations chose to make an exception.
A representative for Chick-fil-A Corp. said in an email that there have been rare cases that “move our local operators to respond with food donations to help communities in need”. Just a few years ago, the chain made it very clear that they were against same-sex marriage, due to the Christian views of their founder Truett Cathy. Cathy once told a journalist at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “It’s a silent witness to the Lord when people go into shopping malls, and everyone is bustling, and you see that Chick-fil-A is closed”.
