Chief says police officer shot in Kansas City, Kansas
A police officer was shot in Kansas City, Kansas, Tuesday, KMBC-TV reported. The officer’s condition is unknown, but Zeigler asked for his followers to “start prayers”.
The officer was in critical condition.
Tuesday’s shooting came after police responded to a report around 1:30 p.m. from a person who said several people in a auto were firing shots.
Police captured one suspect, but another one fled the scene and barricaded himself in a home as police surrounded it, officials with the department told WDAF-TV.
Officers arrived within minutes.
Around 1:57 p.m., police approached another suspect, and multiple shots were fired at 22nd Street and Haskell Avenue.
Tomasic said he knew the officer who had been shot, calling him a “good friend, good person”.
Capt Robert Melton was brought to the University of Kansas Hospital just before 2:30 PM, but resuscitation efforts did not work, trauma surgeon James Howard said at a news conference yesterday.
Current accounts are unclear as to whether all the suspects in the shooting have been taken into custody.
When officer arrived, three or four suspects fled from the auto, police said.
Police have three suspects in custody while another is still at large. They cleared a woman and her children from the area after she came out of the house, her hands raised, and spoke with them. Several officers took cover behind cars.
Next door to the house, just to the south side of Quindaro just east of 16th Street, is a vacant lot.
Dozens of SWAT officers were reportedly on the scene. Officers were still crouched behind vehicle in front of the and there were officers stationed at building to the west of the house. Police moved them out of the way. “Our friends and neighbors across the state line, the Kansas City Kansas Police Department – KCKPD, lost another officer in the line of duty today – their second this year”, a police statement said.
