Chiefs CB Smith Suspended Three Games by NFL
Sean Smith has received a three-game suspension from the NFL for a violation of their substance abuse policy.
“Sean Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs has been suspended without pay for the first three games of the 2015 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse”.
Smith was also placed on two year probation for the incident that occurred in June 2014.
The ever-elusive three-game suspension accounts for the extenuating circumstances in the case, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport on Twitter.
Smith will miss games against the Texans, Broncos and Packers.
The reasoning behind that is the level in which Sean Smith played last season because the veteran cornerback finished 2014 as the fifth-best cornerback in the league, according to Pro Football Focus.
Police said Smith appeared confused and began mumbling statements the officer did not understand.
Following Smith’s arrest, he was demoted to the second team for the remainder of Chiefs’ organized team activities and well into training camp.
Smith, 28, signed a three-year contract worth $16.5 million before the 2013 season.
If Peters doesn’t transition smoothly to the NFL, then Smith’s absence could leave Kansas City in catch-up mode all season.
Now they will rely on first-round pick Marcus Peters and Phillip Gaines to try to stop Peyton Manning, Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, and Cody Latimer on week two. He spent most of his time in the nickel.
That includes one in 2013 that was returned 100 yards for a touchdown, the only one of his six-year career.
