Chiefs come back for wild 20-17 win over the Panthers
Carolina is a 3-point favorite in a game that is likely to be a nail-biter, and the expected return of Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith (out last week with a concussion) tips the scale in favor of the Chiefs.
If the 1-5 start didn’t sink the Panthers’ playoff hopes, this loss-in a game where their opponent didn’t hold the lead until the final second, no less-likely does it. Carolina can only get 10 wins this season and now don’t own a tiebreaker against the other three NFC South teams. They rallied from deficits of 17 points late in the first half and 14 points early in the fourth quarter to take a 20-17 win over the Carolina Panthers. Cam Newton is a quarterback who can scramble at any moment during a play and could hurt the Chiefs if he finds enough space to run.
Newton boosted his career totals to 20,257 passing yards and 3,468 rushing yards as he became the first player with at least 20,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards in his first six National Football League seasons.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs had no offensive touchdowns, and their defense was on the field for much of the afternoon. They were forced to punt on their next drive, and the Chiefs eventually tied the game at 17-17, courtesy of a six-play drive that was marked by another Smith overthrow and Cairo Santos field goal.
“What we have done is put our backs completely against the wall”, Rivera said of Carolina’s playoff hopes. “It’s good to come out on top”. Ford, now in his third season with Chiefs, is coming into his own with nine sacks on the year. The Chiefs ran the clock down from there, and after two running plays Santos came on to kick the game-winner.
The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off an impressive 20-17 comeback win over the Carolina Panthers thanks to cornerback Marcus Peters. Kudos to defensive coordinator Bob Sutton and his players.
“You saw when he defeated cancer, you saw it here”, Reid said. The whole momentum of the game changed there, even though we were down three (after a two-point conversion pass to Kelce). At the time it happened I was okay with it because it took a lot of time off the clock, but upon reflection you simply can not have the football for ten minutes, run 21 plays, and fail to score any points. “But he’s not a punter”.
“We wanted to tighten everything up in the second half and play together as one unit”, Berry said. Stewart gave way at the end of the game to Fozzy Whittaker, who caught one pass for 9 yards. It might not matter this season, but they can’t get into the habit of losing like this or it could translate into an equally very bad 2017 despite what is a winning roster. “I’m too old for this”.
The last time was in high school in part of what became such an annual showdown that in their senior year the Atlanta Journal-Constitution headline on the story previewing the game was simply “Eric Berry vs”. Kansas City limited him to 26 more on 11 carries after that.
Offensively, the Chiefs are averaging 23.1 points and 342.4 total yards (241.6 in passing and 100.8 in rushing) per game.
“Kelvin’s a professional”, Newton said.
The most receiving yards by a Panthers wide receiver against the Chiefs was by Steve Smith, who racked up 120 yards in 2012. I think he’s spent a ton of time in that weight room.
The 2015 Chiefs did what 90 other National Football League teams since 1990 had failed to do – rebound from a 1-5 start to make the playoffs. “Even if you get the 15-yarder (penalty), you’re still defenseless to get teed-off on”. The Panthers have a quick turnaround with Thursday night’s home game against New Orleans. “I caught it and the guys were trying to pry it out, and I was trying to get to the ground”.
