Chiefs cut RB Jamaal Charles
The Kansas City Chiefs and Safety Eric Berry have reportedly reach a a deal on a six year contract worth 78 million dollars.
One player that could be on the free agent market this offseason is current Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles. Terms of the contract were not disclosed by the club. That history of the Chiefs front office and extensions made it no surprise when it was announced that Berry would also receive a similar reward for his services to the Chiefs. Berry will get tagged and the two sides will begin long discussions about a long-term deal.
Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid all praised Charles in a team statement. “I’m very happy for Eric and his family”. If Charles were to sign here, he would have to be the workhorse for this team, which I don’t think he’s ready to handle, but if the eagles decide to put up Demarco Murray type money, it could be hard for Charles to pass up. “He’s a special player and an exceptional human being”. Previous year his stats were down with 24 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, three passes defended and one forced fumble so it could be smart to let Poe test the waters before committing $14 million to him and more if they can manage to sign him long term. In fact, Charles has played in just eight games the past two seasons and has rushed for just 404 yards on 83 carries.
A standout rookie season in which he ran for 1178 yards with 11 touchdowns had him a Pro Bowler right away. Berry was phenomenal last season, nabbing All-Pro honors and finishing the year as the league’s eighth-ranked safety, per Pro Football Focus.
Berry, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in late 2014, returned to make the Pro Bowl in 2015. He became their featured back midway through the 2009 season and went on to become the most prolific running back in franchise history.
Charles played collegiately at Texas and was drafted out of the third round in 2008.
But maybe what really will make Charles enduringly endearing to Chiefs fans is how this all came about from humble roots in Port Arthur, Texas, where as a child he was bullied because of a learning disability.
Tyrann Mathieu of the Arizona Cardinals had previously been the NFL’s highest-paid safety after signing a $62.5m, five-year deal with $40m guaranteed. Are you psyched that Eric Berry is here to stay for another six years?
