Chiefs’ Pederson focused on Patriots, not Philly job
So now the trilogy of Lurie, team president Dom Smolenski and whatever title Howie Roseman has today will decide on who replaces Kelly.
Pederson can interview after the Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans 30-0 on Saturday.
With Adam Gase on his way to Miami, the Philadelphia Eagles coaching search remains “in house”.
Pederson can’t actually be hired until the Chiefs season officially ends which would explain why not only the Eagles have halted their interview process but why they have not hired someone by now.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie must have really despised former head coach Chip Kelly, because here is who he has lined up to replace him.
Coughlin, 69, resigned last Monday following a second straight 6-10 season, but a day later said “not necessarily” when asked if he was done with coaching. The Eagles need a coach with some sort of winning history, not another unknown. With 14 years of coaching experience at the professional level and a magnetic, enjoyable personality, he was an attractive candidate to several franchises looking for a new head honcho. He started nine games at quarterback for the Eagles in 1999 and began his National Football League coaching career as an assistant under Andy Reid in Philadelphia in 2009. That doesn’t mean Shurmur, or whoever is eventually hired, can’t help the Eagles, but said coach would be facing an uphill battle in the court of public opinion. He followed Big Red to Kansas City, rising to offensive coordinator.
“Gosh it went great”, Pederson said. Even Duce Staley is a safer pick, as most of the current players respect him. Also, he could pry over Ben McAdoo to be his offensive coordinator, essentially sticking an extra thorn in the Giants side.
The aforementioned McAdoo has been the brains behind a successful Giants passing offense the past two seasons.
Of the five candidates, three – Pederson, McAdoo and Shurmur – are represented by Bob Lamonte. Eskin was careful to point out throughout that interview that he wasn’t reporting that, but rather giving his opinion.
The Steelers knocked Cincinnati out of the playoffs on Saturday. The Bucs (who might be close to hiring their offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter), the 49ers and the Titans are the only other teams that remain in the coaching hunt. The coach on the KC staff who should be getting interviews is defensive coordinator Bob Sutton.
McDermott has interviewed with the Browns and also will meet with the Buccaneers. If that’s the case, then the search will go into next week at least, and perhaps last past the Super Bowl on February 7, depending on the success of that coach’s team.
