Chiefs set to open without Berry, injured Charles, Houston
It appears Chiefs safety Eric Berry is primed to skip the preseason.
As an unsigned franchise-tagged player, he’s not required to report to training camp and the club can not fine him for not reporting.
And one also has to consider that when Berry does return, it might be fair to wonder how much investment he’d have in the organization, considering the lack of a long-term commitment by the Chiefs. Berry made a miraculous comeback from cancer to hit the field in 2015, and play at a very high level.
“That’s not going to happen, ” Reid said.
“Back in St. Joe”, said Reid. The 27-year-old Berry will make $10,806,000 under the franchise tag.
Charles, who turns 30 in December, might miss the start of the regular season. “I know how things go and it’ll all work out one way or another”. He can’t participate in training camp without first signing the contract. “The doctors will let me know, and Justin will try to keep open communication with all parties here”.
“It’s a weird dynamic that you’re juggling with finances and playing and all those things”. “We’ll just see how it goes”.
Andy Reid got the team over the hump last season by ending their playoff win drought and now they don’t have to worry about that cloud hanging over them. It was later discovered that Kansas City had asked him to purchase a disability policy that included some significant sums (details here).
