Chiefs waive rookie Cox after domestic assault charge
Justin Cox was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday after the news of his arrest for burglary of a residence, aggravated domestic assault, and trespassing became public.
During minicamp in May, Cox insisted that he was ready to move on from his past transgressions, per Herbie Teope of ChiefsDigest.com: “It’s not who I am”.
The alleged incident occurred at the Aspen Heights apartment complex in Starkville, Mississippi on Monday. Police responded to a call about 1 p.m. and Cox was identified as a suspect. His arraignment is expected Tuesday.
The Clarion-Ledger’s Mike Bonner first reported the story.
Cox is still in custody and bond has not yet been set. The domestic violence charge was dismissed at the victim’s request.
It’s his second arrest involving domestic violence in eight months, after similar charges last November.
The Chiefs signed Cox as an undrafted rookie from Mississippi State, which means he’ll be easy enough to make an example of just before camp. He was suspended for MSU’s final three games of the 2014 season, although those charges were later dropped.
The Chiefs offered no other comment on Cox’s release. Cox impressed scouts with his 4.36-second 40-yard dash, even though he was not ultimately selected during the NFL draft in May, according to The Clarion-Ledger.
