The secondary focused on eliminating the big play for San Diego, with tight end Antonio Gates the only real threat.
Philip Rivers #17 of the San Diego Chargers looks to pass in the first quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field on November 29, 2015 in Jacksonville, Florida. But after getting to the 1-yard line, San Diego was called for a delay of game, making the potential tying play a much more hard proposition. With 20 seconds left they had a 4th and 10 at the Chiefs 23 yard line when Rivers hit Vincent Brown for a 22-yard gain. With 2 seconds remaining, Rivers’ pass to Danny Woodhead fell incomplete, securing the Chiefs’ win.
“I’m proud of the way the guys fought”, Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said. Furthermore, they are winning games they always lose.
The Chiefs have done an extraordinary job at turning their season around, and they seem to be gaining more and more confidence with each victory.
However, just four attempts later, Smith threw an interception on a deep ball intended for Maclin, ending his streak at 312 pass attempts without a pick.
If you watched the game, you sort of knew that this was the case. “You want them to be more meaningful”, Smith said.
“I’m glad that we’re not a baseball team because up the middle our nose guard is hurt, our middle linebacker is hurt and our safety is hurt”, Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said during the week.
The Chiefs held San Diego to three points three weeks ago and they do the same here and move to 8-5 on the season with their SEVENTH straight win. Although the Chargers began their drive at the Chiefs’ 26 yard-line, a missed field goal kept them off the scoreboard. The Kansas City offense was not very productive, scoring just one touchdown and producing only 58 yards in the fourth quarter. One of their conquests in this 6 game stretch was a dominating 33-3 win in San Diego.
Rivers was picked by Derrick Johnson on the Chargers’ ensuing possession, and Kansas City had just enough time to get within range for of a 40-yard field goal for a 10-0 halftime lead.
Ford also broke up a pass to preserve Kansas City’s lead on the final play of the game. Gordon was bottled up all afternoon, and the Chargers were forced to abandon the run game in the final minutes.
The Chiefs come into today’s game with a 7-5 record and with real hopes of making the postseason through the Wild Card spots.
But as Bridgewater went to throw the ball, Freeney managed to get a hand onto the quarterback’s arm mid-throw to knock the ball loose. After Chargers’ left tackle King Dunlap left the game due to an ankle injury, Dee Ford was able to take advantage of replacement left tackle, Chris Hairston. Charcandrick West led the way with 54 yards, while Spencer Ware added 52.
