China alone can’t stop North Korea
Toner further said that all previous attempts to persuade North Korea to halt its nuclear program have failed and there is a need to find new ways to engage.
Using a railway metaphor, Wang Yi compared North Korea and the US-South Korea alliance to two accelerating trains that are likely to hit head on. And so, it responded to America’s move by by threatening sanctions against Seoul – and, then, imploring North Korea and the U.S.to suspend their belligerent activities.
At the heart of all this is a question about Beijing’s role in the relationship between China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan and the United States, particularly as the USA charts a new foreign policy under Mr Trump.
Pyongyang’s behaviour has not been rational and the world needs to understand that concerns over its nuclear programme “isn’t about the United States and North Korea”, Toner said, adding that “every nation needs to look at how we can better respond”. The phone call – made at the request of President Trump – began at 8:40 a.m., Korea time, (around three-and-a-half hours ago) and lasted for about 20-minutes. The drill is part of the two countries’ annual military training called Foal Eagle, which runs from March 2 to April 24. Nuclear weapons will not bring security.
Wang’s remarks come just one day after two mobile launchers and part of the equipment necessary for the U.S. anti-missile system, THAAD, arrived in South Korea. That’s because PRC regulators will not be issuing new game distribution licenses to South Korean developers while this ban is in effect, making it impossible for them to receive approval to publish their titles in mainland China. Beijing has worked to curb North Korean coal imports.
North Korea has warned of an “actual war”.
“As long as Kim Jong-un is in power, North Korea will never give up its nuclear weapons … the North will not give them up even if the country is offered $1 trillion or $10 trillion in return”, Thae explained.
China says the conflict should be solved by the United States and North Korea – the “speeding trains” themselves.
Washington and Seoul say the system is defensive and not meant to be a threat to Beijing.
“Accordingly, it should be cleared whether or not China has an intention to attack Korea by force of arms in case that Korea does not withdraw the THAAD deployment”, it insisted.
The next day, the United States responded with its announcement that the THAAD deployment had begun.
At least two of the missile variants North Korea is developing, the Musudan and KN-14, potentially have the range to reach the mainland United States. “We differ somewhat in our approach”, he said.
