China iPhone sales maintained pending patent appeal: Apple
Apple had reportedly been told to halt sales of the phones in Beijing, according to several news outlets. But it is a further symbolic blow for the company in China. “Additionally, the ruling may only relate to sales in Beijing”. Many chalked it up to Chinese officials’ love for iPhones. Despite the relentless bad news from China, 38 Wall Street analysts recommend buying Apple stock immediately; 9 recommend holding the shares; and no firm recommends selling Apple shares. “Basing this on what we have seen, Apple will just crush this company”.
And slowing overall sales in the Chinese smartphone market has been a drag on Apple’s worldwide smartphone business over the a year ago. It may be another round of pushback by the Chinese government against an American company, not unlike the decision to shut down the iBooks and iTunes Movies stores in China back in April.
In what was whispered to be a symbol of the mended relationship, Apple announced that it was investing billion in Didi Chuxing, known as “the Uber of China”. The analyst pointed out that the decision is only applicable to the City of Beijing. At September’s Washington state dinner for President Xi, Mr. Cook sat at the head table. With the possibility of China, on a broader sense. I think this will most likely get overturned.
Patent issues like the one Apple has with Baili are common enough that a recent paper in the Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law examined the topic.
Have you heard of the Shenzhen Baili 100C smartphone? I’m not even sure Shenzhen Baili has a website, and its company listing on Bloomberg is nearly barren.
Apple Inc.is battling yet another lawsuit for alleged infringement of a smartphone design. Baidu’s founder, Robin Li, is a delegate of the central government’s political-advisory committee. While there’s no rhyme or reason for the claim, Apple sometimes justifies a financial settlement rather than going through the legal proceedings.
One op-ed piece from Seeking Alpha reflects on these regulations, fearing that other regional companies will be favored over Apple and a ban enforcement might spread to other cities. Beijing Municipal High People’s Court ruling favored Xintong Tiandi Technology, a maker of leather accessories that have the branding “IPHONE” on the cover, as pictured above.
“Local vendors, such as Huawei, Vivo, and Oppo are eating into the premium segment that Samsung and Apple considered their own”, Canalys said at the time. The patent was re-examined on December 2, last year. It wasn’t clear when the statement was posted online or when the stay was ordered. It was noticed earlier this week by Chinese media. Apple is expected to release its next-generation iPhone later this year. Both appeals would take place in the court system, although the initial judgments were administrative, he said. And there are also chances that it will stop the launch of anticipated “iPhone 7”.
