China’s Zhangjiajie glass bridge closes after two weeks
A true architectural wonder – the world’s longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge which provides visitors with magnificent views of China’s Zhangjiajie mountains – has been closed indefinitely just two weeks after its opening.
Park officials told CNN that while the bridge’s capacity caps at 8,000 per day, they have been swarmed with 10 times as many visitors every day.
The spokesperson said the bridge was not broken, nor had any cracks appeared in its 99 clear floor panels.
The famous bridge also brought renewed interest to other scenic spots in the area.
Officials said the government was planning urgent maintenance work in the area and the bridge closed on Friday, with a re-opening time to be announced, BBC reported.
Designed by the Israeli architect Haim Dotan, the bridge leaves pedestrians suspended almost 1,000ft (300 metres) above the canyon, allowing visitors to look down into the chasm through 99 triple-layered glass panels. Are you kidding me?
One Weibo user, XiaoMOMOYa, wrote on the microblogging site, “I have booked everything and now you are saying you are closed”.
Israeli architect Haim Dotan’s design gives viewers the opportunity to view the chasm beneath their feet through three layers of glass.
According to the management committee of the bridge, “an internal system upgrade” would be undertaken during the suspension of business.
