Chip Kelly reportedly collecting a huge paycheck from 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers hired Kelly as their head coach on Thursday, giving Kelly a safe landing spot just hours before news broke that the Eagles will hire Doug Pederson.

Shanahan had served as offensive co-ordinator for the 49ers the last time San Francisco won a Super Bowl in the 1994-95 season, but general manager Trent Baalke and CEO Jed York have instead plumped for former Philadelphia Eagles coach Kelly.

Kaepernick was discussed during Kelly’s meetings with the 49ers, and Kelly told team officials he liked both Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert, who has some of Kaepernick’s physical gifts and who took over as the starter after eight games previous year.

Kelly, recently fired from the head role at Philadelphia Eagles, will take over the reins from the already-departed Jim Tomsula. He was brought back to the 53-man roster late in the season, but the team did not push the opportunity all that much in 2015.

Kaepernick, according to a source, is unsure how to react to Kelly’s hiring because he’s unsure whether Kelly sees him in the 49ers’ future. “I look forward to watching (GM) Trent (Baalke) and Chip work closely to build a team that will make us all proud”.

“Guess I might have to start running right now to get in shape”, wide receiver Torrey Smith wrote on his Twitter account shortly after the announcement.

They’ve spoken and written of how Kaepernick would be a flawless fit for his fast-paced, wide-open offense that includes read-option schemes and is designed for a mobile quarterback.

“He gives me the ability to be myself, to run where I want to run at, and he gives me the ball enough”, McCoy added…. They’re on the same team. Kaepernick had a pair of surgeries earlier this month to fix an injured thumb and knee, following surgery to fix a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder in November.

Baalke interviewed Coughlin on Monday at an undisclosed location on the East Coast and Jackson on Sunday in Cincinnati.

Things soured for Kelly in the locker room and with the front office, ultimately leading to his demise in Philadelphia.

The Buccaneers’ coaching search also ended Thursday with multiple reports that offensive co-ordinator Dirk Koetter will move up to become head coach.
