Chip Kelly’s dismissal leaves Eagles players stunned, wondering
It is official. Chip Kelly has been fired by the Philadelphia Eagles before their last regular season game of the year. Much of 2015’s disappointing season stems from Murray’s inept productivity because of what many believe was Kelly’s inability to adjust to the personnel he put together, but despite all of this Kelly expressed a deep affection for all of his players and their future success.
Kelly took over for the longtime Philadelphia coach Andy Reid after the 2012 season and turned a team that had been 4-12 into a 10-6 champion of the NFC East.
Harbaugh and Kelly are both great coaches, but both had trouble dealing with the egos of the professional athletes.
Bill Belichick criticized the Eagles for firing Chip Kelly, even defending his record as GM. “I knew that we would have an opportunity to do some things that I was accustomed to doing”. That’s when offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will squeeze into Kelly’s old headphones, but only for a game.
“It’s not something you are sitting at home thinking about”, Barwin said. Lurie made it clear he wants a coach who can relate to his players and everyone else in the building.
“There was a risk involved in allowing Chip to have that kind of say over player transactions”, Lurie said.
Lurie said he chose to fire Kelly before the end of the season to get a jump start on a coaching search and meet with players to talk to them about the decision. All in all, I know he cared about the players but I don’t think he had the best way to go about things.
“I’d say it’s really disappointing”.
“As human beings, you feel bad for people and you feel bad for certain situations”.
“I’ve have a hard time coaching a Pop Warner team today”, he said with a laugh. “Whatever they decide to bring in, we have a lot of weapons on this team”.
“I don’t know how you build a program in one year”, Belichick said.
Belichick had the benefit of winning a Super Bowl in 2001, which clearly helped his grasp on the head-coaching job in New England.
With any coaching change comes uneasiness, for the next coach is bound to have a different taste in personnel. I think we did some of that. “In ’02, we had a lot of issues”, Belichick said, referring to a team that went 9-7 and missed the playoffs.
Kelly lured DeMarco Murray away from division rival Dallas with a five-year, $40 million contract that included $18 million in guaranteed money, but the 2014 National Football League rushing leader never got comfortable in Kelly’s scheme. He took over a team whose offense was ranked 29th in the National Football League for scoring, and after adding Lane Johnson, he completely redid it, and turned it into a 4th placed offense.
