Chip Kelly takes over as Jarryd Hayne’s 49ers coach
What bodes well for Kelly is that he will have former Eagles executive Tom Gamble working 49ers general manager Trent Baalke.
Kelly was sacked by Philadelphia with one week remaining in the regular season, despite winning 10 games in each of the previous two years. He won the NFC East in 2013 and had 10-win seasons in his first two years before slipping to 6-9 in 2015 after he was granted full control of the roster.
San Francisco fired Tomsula, who was promoted from his role of defensive line coach following Jim Harbaugh’s exit, after he went 5-11 in his only season in the job. That notion proved true a few weeks later, as Kelly was introduced as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.
Another insider says Kelly’s “power play” in Philly stemmed from the Eagles’ front-office ineptitude, not Kelly’s desire for personnel control.
“The Post piece also helpfully informs us that while coaching the Eagles “[it] seemed Kelly valued each morning’s urine test – plastic specimen cups waiting in locker stalls, jersey numbers written in black ink – as much as how a player performed during practice or a game”.
Deciding on the quarterback will be a major decision for Kelly in the coming months. Vic Fangio knows Kaepernick well and will be tasked to contain the previously struggling QB that could have a bounce-back season under Kelly. The team chose to part ways with him after just one year. Being hired as offensive coordinator would be quite the jump for him considering he didn’t have any National Football League experience prior to the 2015 season.
Chip Kelly joins the 49ers after a three-year stint in Philadelphia. LeSean McCoy was traded away from Kiko Alonso, Nick Foles and a second round pick were traded for Sam Bradford and Jeremy Maclin dipped out of Philadelphia to join the Eagles’ former head coach Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was widely believed Kaepernick’s future with the 49ers was in doubt after getting benched midway through the season.
ESPN.com’s Bill Barnwell noted the 49ers wouldn’t necessarily need to cut Kaepernick for financial purposes, since they will have around $50 million in cap space after their rollover before doing anything. With Thursday’s hire of Kelly, however, Kaepernick could be the ideal fit for the new coach’s energetic offense if he can get his game back on track.
A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that Kansas City offensive coordinator Doug Pederson has accepted the Eagles’ offer to become their head coach.
