Chipotle announced new food safety plans during nationwide meeting
A man with a similar phone number to Chipotle has received an avalanche of text messages demanding free burritos.
The restaurant is offering customers a free burrito to those who text “RAINCHECK” to 888-222.
The restaurant’s stock is trading significantly lower than its record high past year, and the company is facing a federal criminal investigation.
“It’s just unbelievable. I’ve never found Chipotle to be closed like this”, said Almah, who frequents the restaurant each week. Act fast though, because the offer is only good until 6 p.m. EST Monday.
Chipotle is trying to bounce back from plunging sales since an E. coli outbreak came to light in late October, and a separate norovirus incident in December.
With this new contingency, Chipotle is hoping that it will be able to decrease the chances of another norovirus outbreak from happening.
Chipotle is spending as much as $10 million to fund the effort, co-Chief Executive Officer Steve Ells said during a meeting with employees on Monday.
Chipotle offered free burritos to customers whose lunch plans were scrapped by Monday’s closing, USA Today reported.
But let’s get to the more important point: This afternoon only, Chipotle is also giving out coupons for free burritos.
The outbreak started in the Northwest and spread to a dozen states before Chipotle got it under control.
Chipotle remains committed to sourcing the best ingredients possible, according to its website. “Over the last few months, we have been implementing an enhanced food safety plan that will establish Chipotle as an industry leader in food safety”, he said.
“It’s important to us to support small- and medium-sized farmers whenever we can”.
While you might need to wait for you daily fix of guacamole, the company has said that customers can listen to the briefing through Periscope and Twitter beginning at noon ET.
