Choose your side with ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Google apps
“It probably isn’t a surprise that there are tons of Star Wars fans like me here at Google”, Clay Bavor, vice president of product management, wrote in a blog post. Google Maps turns its little Street View man into a stormtrooper (at least, it did for me when I chose the dark side’s black-and-red color scheme). Even though you’re cautioned to choose wisely, you’re not bound to your choice – you can switch sides at any time.
Google’s motto may be, “Don’t be evil”, but they still let you choose the dark side of the Force with a new extension that will Star Wars-ify your internet browsing experience.
While it seems that the new Star Wars movie is everywhere, from grocery stores to televisions, it was third on the list in a new Bloomberg Politics poll. And more specifically, which side should your browser be on? Also, Google notes that it may take a couple of hours for all changes to take place, so once you make a side selection, allow for time to pass before you get upset about not seeing wookies and what have you. The Gmail inbox background will display light or dark side images.
Google Maps – Easily locate where you are at with an X-Wing or TIE Fighter symbol.
YouTube – Your progress bar for videos will now be in the form of a lightsaber.
Google says changes will appear on Chromecast, Waze, Search, Now and Wear as well. Previously unseen footage suggests that Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron will be joined in the single-seater spacecraft by pilot Jessika Pava and Nien Nunb, the alien who helped Lando Calrissian pilot the Millennium Falcon in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. They will also work only on your personal accounts with no effects on Google Apps for Work, Government, or Education.
We’ve seen a bunch of trailers and TV spots now for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but now Lucasfilm has released the very first clip from the highly anticipated film! And, obviously, Google will include a couple of easter eggs for good measure.
