Chris Rock calls the Oscars ‘the White BET Awards’
For the second year in a row, the four biggest acting categories were dominated by white actors.
ET also caught up with Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs who believes that the lack of diversity in this year’s nominations is “disappointing”. The announcement of the nominees was followed by immediate backlash on Twitter, including the use of the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. Will Smith (‘Concussion”), Michael B Jordan (‘Creed”), Idris Elba (‘Beasts’), Samuel L Jackson (‘The Hateful Eight’), “Straight Outta Compton’ and “Beasts of No Nation’ have been listed among the snubs for black actors and movies focused on black stories. An overwhelming number of Academy members are white, with the average age of voters being 63 years old. “Of course I am disappointed”, she told Deadline in a statement, “But it is not to take away the greatness (of the films nominated)”. This has been a great year in film, it really has across the board.
Actress Jada Pinkett Smith speaks onstage at the “Gotham” panel during the FOX Network portion of the 2014 Summer Television Critics Association at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on July 20, 2014, in Beverly Hills, California. “We’re going to keep pushing it”.
For Rock, the only question he has to wonder as a host right now is whether or not there is going to be some sort of substantial burnout when it comes to jokes about the nominations by the time we get around to the show.
