Chris Sale Apologizes To Fans, White Sox Teammates
“It’s something that you deal with”.
With Chris Sale reportedly on the trading block, Saturday’s meltdown with the front office regarding throwback uniforms made the situation even more intriguing. It was 91 degrees with high humidity when the game began.
Sale will start Thursday against the crosstown Cubs in his first appearance since the ace left-hander was punished by the team for destroying collared throwback uniforms it was scheduled to wear. The hit scored Eaton, who walked to lead off the inning and finished 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
Sale said he first told the team he did not want to pitch in those particular uniforms, which have collars and are created to be worn untucked, back in spring training. “But we’re here for teammates”. We’ve seen that at times spill between the white lines. He reiterated that he would like to stay with the White Sox. Sale, who started the All-Star Game, is 14-3 with a 3.18 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 19 starts (133 innings).
“Chris has been suspended for violating team rules, for insubordination, and for destroying team equipment”, Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager, said in a statement. “I’m sure it would be more entertaining for all, except me”.
Anyway, Sale’s full comments are worth a read – in large part because he doesn’t come off as unhinged as you would suspect someone who took a knife to uniform tops to come across. Or at least the threads the White Sox planned to wear on Saturday. The crowd booed when Albers was announced as the starter as the teams warmed up. Sale reportedly hasn’t asked for a trade from the team, and maintains that he still doesn’t want one.
The pitcher publicly called out Kenny Williams, the team’s executive vice president, after Adam LaRoche quit the team because his son was no longer allowed to visit the clubhouse everyday.
Last season, Sale attempted to gain entrance into the Royals locker room after his ejection after a brawl between the teams.
Saturday wasn’t the first time Sale has exited before a game. Ventura, in his fifth year as manager, is in the final season of his contract and Chicago is fading from playoff contention after a 23-10 start. “I just want him to pitch”. “And I’m here. I’m here for now”.
Sale has also said he’d like to stay in Chicago.
Hahn said the punishment was unrelated to previous incidents. Miguel Gonzalez starts for the Good Guys in Black against Jake Arrieta for the North Siders. “And the guys that may come available are going to come at a steep price”.
The game resumed Sunday and the White Sox quickly ended it. “The incident, which was non-physical in nature, now is under further investigation by the club”, GM Rick Hahn said in a statement released just before the scheduled 6.10pm start.
