The Sox reached an agreement on a multiyear contract with free-agent outfielder Chris Young, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.
So what does this mean for the current Red Sox outfield of Mookie Betts, Rusney Castillo and Jackie Bradley Jr.?

Though advance defensive metrics suggest that the 32-year-old has declined from one of the best outfielders in the game to roughly average, he’s capable of playing all three outfield spots, meaning that the Sox can use him – along with the leftthanded Brock Holt – to manage the playing time of Betts, Bradley, and Castillo. He’s hit same-handed pitchers at a career.224/.293/.411 clip. Boston will be his fifth team, most recently with the New York Yankees last season. He’s also a dead pull hitter, which should enable to take full avantage of Fenway Park’s dimensions. Once a promising five-tool prospect, Young is merely a platoon player at this point.
