Christian Groups Censure GOP Over Syrian Refugee Crisis
President Barack Obama has pledged to let in 10,000 people fleeing the carnage in Syria, but governors of at least a dozen states now say they won’t accept any. They went after him for an “apology tour”, in which he publicly acknowledged that, in the past, the United States had done a few things wrong.
Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves nailed this sentiment on Monday saying in a statement, “President Obama said last week ISIS was contained”.
President Obama has heard a few of the Republican hysteria about Syrian refugees, and he’s clearly unimpressed.
Cruz has said there is “not a meaningful risk” that Christians are committing terrorism, but has not said how he would determine the religion of refugees.
Bush emphasized that he wanted any refugees resettled in the United States to be rigorously vetted – which is already standard policy in the States – but said support for refugees was “a noble tradition in our country for many years” and should not be eliminated.
The president called on Americans to follow Bush’s example.
Of course, over 90 percent of Russian airstrikes in Syria have targeted anti-regime rebels rather than ISIS, and have, at times, even provided air cover for ISIS forces during their battles with rebel groups.
On the campaign trail, Cruz often makes a point to describe what he calls the persecution of Christians in Middle Eastern countries.
The Texas Republican and presidential candidate appeared outside the Capitol Hill Club with recent supporter Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, who also called Obama’s comments “more than a little rich”. “It will not be deterred by targeted airstrikes with zero tolerance for civilian casualties, when the terrorists have such utter disregard for innocent life”, Cruz said, using the logic of fighting fire – in this case, being unafraid to take civilian lives – with fire.
“Under current law it takes anywhere from on average 18 to 24 months to clear a refugee to come into the United States”.
On the other side of the aisle, leading Democratic politicians were quick to dismiss a religious test as contrary to the values on which the country was founded.
“ISIS showed they are committing an act of war against the West”, he said, explaining that Republican party leaders had assembled a task force to consider legislation “as quickly as possible” that would suspend the admittance of Syrian refugees. “You can do it in foreign countries”, Cruz told reporters. Ryan said that the Syrian refugee bill would be the first of many on security and travel issues.
The entry of one Syrian terrorist into Europe doesn’t mean that US vetting procedures are lax, that all refugees are suspect, or that Americans should throw their sense of compassion out the window.
