Christie calls out Democrats in GOP undercard debate
After Jindal trained his fire on Huckabee, accusing him of presiding over increases in taxes, spending and government payroll as Arkansas governor, Christie pounced – on Hillary. Also onstage were Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Pennsylvania Sen.
“We’ve incentivized people not to marry, we incentivized people to cohabitate, not marry. Why?” He said other donors have already expressed interest in helping out, and he has several other ads already prepared.
Jindal went on the attack against Christie and Huckabee, also dropped for the first time from prime time, asserting they were not conservative enough.
Huckabee objected and said that he in fact lowered spending. Namedropping New Hampshire (where he has to do well to survive) he tells a story of a woman who was anxious about how to pay her bills.
Donald Trump said “we can not let Hillary Clinton, who is the worst secretary of state in the history of our country, win this election”. “She is the real adversary tonight and we better stay focused as Republicans on her”. “The opponent is Hillary Clinton”. “Don’t worry about Huckabee or Jindal, worry about her”, he said early on in the hourlong debate. “The point is, what can we do that’s better?” said Jindal. Jindal jibed at Christie that while the New Jersey governor should get a “ribbon for participation and a juice box” for service in Trenton, he was insufficiently conservative.
“We can send humanitarian aid, that’s something that I’m not opposed to”, said Huckabee.
“The truth is this government has been growing bigger and bigger, more corrupt, less effective, crushing the engine of economic growth for a very long time“, said businesswoman Carly Fiorina. “It’s gone up $5 billion in New Jersey, down $9 billion in Louisiana”, Jindal said. “It’s about actually cutting government spending, not just talking about cutting government spending”. “Because they FIGHT”, he screamed into the microphone. They pat themselves on the back. But it’s not going to catapult him into the top tier of candidates – or perhaps even keep him on the main stage at the next debate.
“We’ve had Vietnam War veterans with tears in their eyes saying nobody has ever thanked them before”. “The differences between me and Bobby Jindal?”.
Christie later blamed Clinton and Obama by name for a “feckless” and weak foreign policy facing China and other powers.
Being at the so-called “kid’s table” debate was a setback for Christie and Huckabee, who were on the main stage for the three previous debates.
