Christie says Trump Jr.’s meeting “doesn’t help” political cynicism
President Donald Trump’s attorney insisted Sunday there was nothing illegal in the meeting Trump’s eldest son had with a Russian lawyer during last year’s presidential campaign.
Warner, like nearly all of his Democratic counterparts, is focused on the news that Trump Jr. and White House adviser Jared Kushner met with the Russian lawyer for information about Hillary Clinton.
Mr Sekulow appeared on five television networks on Sunday to defend Mr Trump and his son, following the latest accusations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. On Friday, Russian-American lobbyist and former Soviet military officer Rinat Akhmetskin told the AP that he, too, was there.
“Honestly, in a world of politics, most people are going to take that meeting”, Trump said.
Sen. Mark Warner, D-VA, who vice chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, said they would very much like to talk with those involved.
While on ABC News’ This Week, when asked if the President would pardon “key figures” in the Russian Federation investigation, Sekulow said he hasn’t discussed the issue with Trump, and that if he had, it would be protected under attorney-client privilege. Trump Jr.’s description of the meeting has changed as details get reported.
“We’ve had no notification from the special counsel”, Sekulow said on CBS’s “Face the Nation”.
The meeting appears to be the most tangible evidence of a connection between Trump’s election campaign and Russian Federation, a subject that has prompted investigations by congressional committees and a federal special counsel.
The revelation of this meeting last week has set Washington on fire with scandal and then justifications, President Donald Trump’s lawyer even tried to blame the Secret Service. Sekulow is working on Donald Trump’s private legal team, and often appears on TV as a defender of Trump.
Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard Law School professor and renowned civil libertarian, said Sekulow is pointing out what he said is the futility of a law enforcement approach to the Russian Federation matter. The Secret Service responded that Trump Jr. was not its protectee at the time and did not screen people who interacted with him. He added that “the president was not aware of the meeting and did not participate in it”.
Legal analysts have said Trump Jr. may have breached campaign finance laws that forbid foreign contributions – and a special counsel is conducting a criminal investigation into possible collusion between Trump associates and Russian Federation during the campaign.
The President has maintained having no knowledge of the meeting until the Times’ reporting.
Meanwhile, Trump, with all the affection of Lucille Bluth, has claimed that his son is a “high quality person” who should be applauded for his “transparency”.
Opposition researchers from both parties have contested Trump’s claim that such activity is common or accepted practice.
