Rubio unleashed a barrage of attacks on Trump during Thursday’s Republican debate, targeting the latter’s character, business ethnics and political credentials.
He also accused Trump of shifting his position on deportation, hiring people from other countries to take jobs from Americans and being fined for worker violations.
Christie dismissed Trumps comments about Muslims in New Jersey celebrating after the 9/11 attacks.
Notably, Trump has also been endorsed by Congressmen Chris Collins, Congressman Duncan Hunter, former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin, South Carolina Lt Governor Henry McMaster, and Arizona Treasurer Jeff DeWitt.
They left a mark, and Christie never quite recovered despite landing a devastating blow against Rubio in his final debate of the Republican race. “I guess because I figured Governor Christie would probably not participate in the campaign at this point”, he said.
The timing, however, was a coincidence.
The move, Trump’s highest-profile endorsement yet, was unexpected, especially since Christie in recent months repeatedly had portrayed the billionaire businessman as unhinged emotionally and unfit to be president.
If Christie is indeed starting a trend, the party’s acceptance of Trump as its nominee could be inevitable.
Christie joined Trump at a Forth Worth news conference and praised him as “the person who will go to Washington, D.C., and be able to absolutely turn the place around”.
But Mr Rubio, the Florida Senator, continued to lambast Mr Trump the morning after the debate. “I just watched you repeat yourself five times five seconds ago”, Rubio said with glee.
Doherty backed Trump in October, while much of the rest of the state’s GOP establishment backed Christie.
In reference to Cruz’s birth in Canada and the false belief held by about 10% of self-identified conservatives that Barack Obama was born in Africa, he added: “I will say that our Canadian is better than your Kenyan”.
And his options were limited. It marked the beginning of a long-awaited takedown effort on Trump heading into the weekend before Super Tuesday.
Trump, known for his frequent use of coarse and profane language on the campaign trail, scolded former Mexican President Vicente Fox for using a profanity in talking about Trump’s plan for the wall.
