Retailers’ impulse to jump on the bandwagon with competing sales events might surprise customers who were underwhelmed by the range of products and the size of the discounts included in Amazon’s Prime Day sales previous year.
More than 34.4 million items were sold that day, exceeding the amount sold on Black Friday the previous year.
“During cross shopping, if customers find somebody like JC Penney is 25% more expensive than Amazon, it will have a pretty big impact in terms of trust”, he said. Another “gift later” victor: This week Walmart.com launched exclusive pre-ordering on “Pie Face Showdown”, the sequel to one of 2015’s biggest games, which will ship to customers more than a month before it’s available elsewhere.

The company launched the event last July in an effort to promote its $99 annual Prime loyalty program, which offers free two-day shipping and other perks. This is a benefit that is oftentimes associated with being an Amazon Prime member. An e-commerce player, NewEgg, is also aiming to get in on the action by offering hundreds of deals on Tuesday on items such as laptops and smartphones. Mattress chains, for example, have long packed three-day weekends such as Memorial Day with promotions. Daily sign-ups for ShippingPass have more than quadrupled since last week, Wal-Mart said. Last year, legions of Twitter users joked that the assortment of items was disappointing and felt like a digital garage sale.
