Church Lady returns to ‘SNL’ to roast Ted Cruz
“Please welcome, Satan”, Carvey said, introducing former Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, by way of the nickname former Speaker John Boehner coined for the Texas senator.
“Saturday Night Live” alum Dana Carvey returned for last night’s cold open and brought back an old favorite character, Church Lady, to opine on “the exciting presidential match-up between a godless liberal Democrat and Hillary Clinton”. Carvey didn’t exactly break new ground with the character, which was sort of the point, but the central joke, that not even the Church Lady can stand Ted Cruz’s sanctimonious bullshit, is a good one. And an added bonus: Melania! She starts off by taking some jabs at the sinful fashions on display at the Met Gala, but then she brings on guests Ted Cruz (played by Taran Killam) and Donal Trump (played by Darrell Hammond) and chastises them in exactly the way you would expect.
“Saturday Night Live”/NBCTaran Killam, right, as demonic Ted Cruz on “SNL.”I love all the books in the Bible”.
“Was it God’s plan for you to be humiliated by an orange mannequin?”
Church Lady came back for an “isn’t that special?”
The skit ends with Cruz being possessed by a demon declaring himself “lord of shadows” but is immediately insulted by Trump calling him “lord of the weak chins” and “you’re the first guy who got possessed and looks better”.
“Donnie, there are those who say you’re not qualified, and that’s not true”.
“Has anyone ever told you that you are just a little bit preachy?” the Church Lady inquired.
