Cincinnati police kill robbery suspect
Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac said a struggle ensued between one officer and the suspect.
The officer who shot the man will be placed on leave during an internal investigation, as is department protocol.
Multiple officers responded to the call, but only one officer seems to have fired, Isaac said. The officer came out uninjured and is now being interviewed by authorities, which is standard operating procedure after use-of-force. Eastern about a robbery at the Kroger store in an area called Over-the-Rhine, which is close to the city’s downtown.
“And the suspect pulled a knife and actually held it to the security officer’s throat”.
A Cincinnati police officer shot and killed a person that matched the description of a knife-wielding robbery suspect downtown Sunday morning. He says Porter charged the officer with a knife as the policeman was getting out of his cruiser. Police said it’s believed Brucato fired six times, striking Porter multiple times. Isaac said two officers investigating the robbery spotted Porter on foot and pulled over their vehicle.
Video from a witness shows what appears to be the suspect covered with a sheet.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene.
“When we get him back in the office, we’ll be able to a thorough examination and see if he’s been shot anywhere else”, Sammarco said.
Isaac said that Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters served a subpoena preventing police from releasing video of the incident for now.
“I think it’s important that we put out the information as timely as possible”.
Daniel Hills, local president of the Fraternal Order of Police, told the station, “It’s very, very traumatic for our officers”.
“I can understand the frustration of the people. Cincinnati is a model for the country”, Peterson Mingo said. “But what we have to do is maintain our minds and our sense of reason”.
Police tell The Cincinnati Enquirer the man was shot on Government Square around 7:40 a.m. Sunday.
There have been three other fatal shootings involving Cincinnati police officers in 2016. In February, multiple officers shot and killed Paul Gaston, 37, after he reached for a gun in the waistband of his trousers.
